In a previous Privacy Peril we told you how miscreants use informal messaging apps to spoof well-respected law firms and other businesses. This tip pointed out the security risks in using these messaging apps to conduct confidential client communications. There is yet another reason you should carefully consider the pros and cons of business use of messaging app before pressing “Send.”
Some messaging apps – such as WhatsApp, Google Messages, and Apple iMessage – collect customer data from the conversation participants. While the use of that data varies by app, it is a safe bet clients and customers will not appreciate receiving targeted marketing communications or offers because you messaged about the status of a lawsuit or details of a deal.
While texting may be unavoidable when initiated by a client or customer, they should be advised of the risks of texting confidential information and be discouraged from using non-secure messaging apps to conduct business.
