1. Tell us about your practice.
I represent a diverse group of private equity, healthcare, investment bank, real estate, manufacturing and nonprofit companies and their principals in a variety of mergers & acquisitions, corporate, finance and securities transactions and regulatory matters. I’ve been lucky to work with many top-performing executives and business owners for 25 plus years. It’s rewarding to participate in their successes as well as those of new clients. I enjoy the strategic engineering of being a deal lawyer and corporate advisor with the goal of helping clients devise “win-win” solutions to the specific challenges posed by their particular competitive and regulated industry sector.
2. Why did you choose to pursue a career in the legal field?
Initially, it was probably my deep interest in politics and public policy. I was a political science major at Vanderbilt and at that time most poli-sci majors went to law school. (What else could we do?!) I was also attracted by the opportunity for civic and community involvement afforded by the relative independence of a private law practice. But it was the influence of a dynamic tax law professor at UVA and of a corporate lawyer mentor early in my legal career that steered me toward a future primarily in business transactions law.
3. What hobbies do you enjoy outside of the office?
I’m a news junkie who has to have my daily fix of the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post and RealClearPolitics. Is it too embarrassing to admit that I watch C-SPAN? When my three children were younger, I coached each of their 6 – 8 year old soccer teams and then avidly followed their school sports and music activities. I enjoy long distance running and like both competitive (Moon Pie 10 miler in Bell Buckle is one of my favorites) and social morning runs. Running the Boston Marathon was particularly memorable.
