Bass, Berry & Sims attorney Ashleigh Karnell was profiled by her alma mater, Belmont University College of Law, in recognition of her outstanding legal career and recent inclusion on the Nashville Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 list in 2024.

In addition to her litigation work at Bass, Berry & Sims, the profile outlines Ashleigh’s pro bono work on two cases involving individuals who had been wrongfully convicted and were ultimately exonerated in 2023. “I feel this moral obligation to help folks that need it,” she said. “If we have a law degree and license, we have an extra layer of privilege that we should use to help our community wherever we find people in need.” Ashleigh hopes her work on these types of cases inspires others to contribute pro bono hours, “I want to create this example where you can do great commercial work while also helping make our community better for those who can’t afford an attorney but desperately need one.”

Ashleigh, a 2017 Belmont University College of Law graduate, chose the school because “When I saw the facilities, I was blown away. They feel indicative of how intentional Belmont’s program is and reflects the type of program they want to create and offer for students.”

The profile, “Belmont Law Alumna Ashleigh Karnell: Pursuing Justice for the Wrongfully Convicted,” was published June 27 by Belmont University College of Law and is available online.
